    SCIA + IADRC: China and Sri Lanka Deepen Cooperation on International Commercial Dispute Resolution Mechanism

    On 30 October 2023, at the First China (Kashi)-Central & South Asia Forum on the Rule of Law (hereinafter as“Forum”), organized by the Law Society of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the Guangdong Law Society and the China Legal Exchange Center, co-organized by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (hereinafter as “SCIA”) and other institutions, SCIAsigned the CooperationAgreement on Diversified Resolution of International Commercial Disputes with International ADR Center of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Institute for the Development of Commercial Law and Practice of Sri Lanka (hereinafter as “IADRC”). The two parties will deepen the cooperation between China and Sri Lanka and other South Asian countries in diversified resolution of international commercial disputes and will promote a world-class, market-oriented business environment governed by a sound legal framework. The Sri Lankan delegation, led by Sanjaya Rajaratnam, Attorney General of Sri Lanka, witnessed the signatory at the Forum.

    SCIA has established close and good cooperation with the legal and business communities of Sri Lanka for a long time. On 1 March 2019, the Sri Lanka delegation, led by Hon. Jayantha Jayasuriya, the then Attorney General of Sri Lanka, and Sumathi Dharamawardena, SCIA arbitrator and Senior Deputy Attorney General of Sri Lanka,along with 12 other delegates,visited SCIA. SCIA and the delegationheld discussions on economic and trade exchanges and legalcooperation between China and Sri Lanka,as well as theconvergence of rules and innovation of mechanism between China and South Asia in international commercial dispute resolution. From 8 to9 August 2019,upon the invitationfrom the Attorney General of Sri Lanka, Prof. Peter Malanczuk, Council member of SCIA, led a delegation topay areturnvisit to the Attorney General of Sri Lanka. The delegation engaged in discussions with Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasinghe, Deputy Attorney General of Sri Lanka, Dilrukshi Dias Wickramasinghe, SCIA arbitrator and Senior Deputy Attorney General of Sri Lanka, Sumathi Dharamawardena, and visited Tilak Marapana, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka,exploring collaboratives initiatives for the development of international arbitrationbetween China and South Asian countries.
